Black businesses and residents along the Gulf of Mexico are urging British Petroleum to live up to its promise that it would compensate them for their losses due to the oil spill.

Operation People for Peace, an organization advocating for the poor and minority families of the gulf, recently flew to the the company’s headquarters in London to demand compensation for their claims.

According to the organization, BP is behind on nearly $500 million in compensation to residents and businesses.

“Almost 90 percent of our claimants are single parents with an average of two children. Their earnings are below the poverty line. They live in geographic locations and are engaged in occupations that were impacted most by the spill,” said coalition chairman Dr. Art Rocker.
