Donald Trump in his wacky logic now says he’s not a racist because he tapped Arsenio Hall as the latest winner of his show, “Celebrity Apprentice.”

During an appearance at the North Carolina State Republican Convention on Friday, Trump balked at assertions that his recent rant about President Barack Obama‘s birth certificate was not racially motivated.

“Somebody said, ‘Oh, because I brought up the birth certificate, I’m a racist,’ ” Trump said.

“I said, ‘How can I be a racist? I just picked Arsenio Hall.’ ”

Seriously?

So I guess it’s time to send off that check to the N.A.A.C.P for a lifetime membership because Trump picked a Black man that made of all of America go “woff, woff, woff” for years back in the 1990s?

Trump says that he doesn’t drink. Well, he must be smoking something if he thinks we believe he doesn’t have issues with Black folks.

Mind you, this is the same man who last year lead a Birther campaign, joining a movement already embroiled in racial hostility and prejudice, to force President Obama to release a long-form version of his birth certificate. He is also the same man who said that,”I have a great relationship with,” his words, “the Blacks.” And, According to the New York Daily News, Trump is trying to use a biography from two decades ago that incorrectly cited Obama’s country of birth as Kenya to attack the President.

Another issue to keep in mind is how Trump handled his first Black Apprentice, Randall Pinkett, during the show’s fourth season in 2005. Pinkett, a Rhodes Scholar, holder of three masters degrees and an MIT doctorate, a bachelor’s from Rutgers, and years of extensive business experience, was competing against a smart, bright but far less qualified contestant in Rebecca Jarvis.

Pinkett was 3-0 in all of the challenges he lead while Jarvis earned a record of 1-2 in the ones she was in charge of. He also successfully won his final challenge in which he raised more than $11,000 during a outside charity event, despite competing against poor weather.

Yet Trump had the unmitigated gall to ask Pinkett whether Jarvis should be hired along with him as a “Co-Apprentice.” Pinkett said that, since the show was called “The Apprentice” and not “The Apprenti,” it is appropriate that he should have the title alone.

His remarks were met by a wave of racially-charged criticisms from viewers scolding Pinkett for not bringing Jarvis on.

Trump’s decision to put Jarvis on equal footing with the intellectually and professionally superior Pinkett to begin with proves that, no matter how qualified Blacks are, our ability to stand on our own merits will always be in question.

The last issue deals with Arsenio Hall’s decision to join Trump’s foolery to begin with. I find it perplexing for any self-respecting Black man to join forces with someone who consistently race-baits America’s first Black President. To be fair, Hall has not responded to Trump’s recent remarks. But how he eventually reacts will reveal Hall’s true character.

Is he just trying to get back into the national spotlight after being off the scene for a while or is he a brotha who is willing sacrifice his “Black Card” to be Trump’s Token Negro?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
