Think Scandal actress Kerry Washington attributes her career success to her own acting abilities? She doesn’t. The film and television star, who has a lead role in Tyler Perry’s new comedy, Peeples, views her accomplishments through a lens of gratefulness, saying, she has simply been “blessed.”

In an interview with Ebony Magazine, the 36-year-old Hollywood celeb says, “I’ve been really blessed. My whole life I have been in acting classes with people who are vastly more talented than I am.”

She adds, “I wish I could say that it was something I did that has made me have the career that I have today. I’ve just been really blessed with opportunities, and by the grace of God I have been able to meet those opportunities when they come along.”

Her role as Grace Peeples has come along at a time when Washington is at the height of her career, with many touting her as one of the most bankable actresses right now.

In the comedy Peeples, she stars opposite Craig Robinson (The Office), who plays her boyfriend Wade Walker, a blue collar guy seeking to impress Grace’s uppity, well-off parents—a task that will prove far more difficult than he had hoped.

A departure from some of her more serious roles, like Scandal’s Olivia Pope, or Django’s Broom Hilda, Washington says, “I love doing comedy, and whenever I get the opportunity to do a comedy, I feel so grateful and excited, because I’m really drawn to doing different kinds of work in different genres in different mediums.”
