DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

19 Action News is breaking new information about crime in downtown Cleveland.

We have staggering new stats that show major crime is up — and it couldn’t come at a worst time. The new convention center and Flats renovation are drawing more people downtown.

According to police statistics rape and robbery in downtown Cleveland are up during the first six months of this year compared to last year.

And after a couple of highly publicized murders in downtown, we wanted to know how safe are people feeling downtown?

“I feel very safe. I wouldn’t have brought my children if I didn’t feel safe,” said Tisha Mochan of Leroy.

Tisha Mochan and her family are preparing to enjoy the Cleveland Orchestra concert on Public Square. Her family often comes in from the suburbs for games or to go to museums. But she is not alarmed by the latest crime stats.

“I think it’s unfortunate. I think our society has a prevalence of violence. Unfortunately, it’s all big cities,” added Mochan.

Rachel Davis and her family came downtown from Stow.

“We love coming down here. Downtown especially always has seemed very safe,” said Rachel Davis.

The murder of Aliza Sherman and another murder near a downtown nightclub late last month have put the spotlight on downtown Cleveland, which recently made a list of most dangerous cities.

But city officials might be happy to hear the words of the people we spoke to including Marsha Edmonson who was downtown with her children.

“Normally, I feel pretty good. I work at Horseshoe Cleveland. It’s much safer than it has been over the years,” said Marsha Edmonson of Shaker Heights.

She’s heard the stories and the statistics but asked, “Where? It makes me wonder. You hear about it but you just don’t see it,” stated Marsha.

The crime stats cover the area from the East bank of the Flats to CSU’s campus.

The good news: assault, theft and motor vehicle theft are down.
