CLEVELAND – Heinen’s Fine Foods is coming to downtown Cleveland.

The hometown grocery chain announced Friday it will create a new 33,000-square-foot grocery store inside the historic former Ameritrust rotunda at the corner of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue.

Twin brothers, Jeff and Tom Heinen, told NewsChannel5 they are excited to start the project and contribute to the on-going growth in the downtown neighborhood.

“We hope to have plans for the store completed by Thanksgiving,” said Tom Heinen. “We believe that neighborhood will continue to expand and we want to be there for our customers.”

Heinen’s customer Joyce Sylvia, who works downtown, said she is excited by the Heinen’s announcement.

“I’m a devoted loyal customer, and it will be wonderful,” said Sylvia. “I don’t live downtown, but I’ll be able to stop and pick things up before I go home and make my life much easier. I think it’s wonderful. It will make a great addition to the city.”

Downtown Cleveland Alliance Chief Executive Officer Joe Marinucci said he is also enthusiastic about Heinen’s coming to downtown Cleveland.

Marinucci told NewsChannel5 the downtown neighborhood is currently made up of about 11,000 residents, but he believes because of a series of development projects like the new Heinen’s location, that number will grow to about 14,000 within the next 18 months.

“That rotunda has been vacant for many years. Through the market, people are going to be able to touch that all throughout the course of a day,” explained Marinucci.

“They’re going to be able to enjoy it. They’re going to have prepared foods and they’re going to have a restaurant option. So from our perspective, it’s a great way to animate the space and get Clevelanders into one of our most historic buildings.”

The massive project at the Ameritrust complex also includes apartments, offices, a hotel and Cuyahoga County’s new headquarters.

The new Heinen’s location will occupy three floors of the former Ameritrust rotunda and is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2014.
