The Cleveland Metropolitan School District got an earful from the community Tuesday night about schools still having substitute teachers in the classroom.

The district trying to keep their promise of smaller class sizes got a late start hiring last spring. Making things worse, 51 employees have resigned or retired already since the start of the school year. Currently the district has 84 open teaching positions.

“The fact that a council person has to go to a school and find out there are not enough teachers in that school is unacceptable,” said Ward 2 Cleveland Councilman Zach Reed.

“We are almost a quarter of the school year in, that’s the problem. I mean, if we were talking about this in July we would understand that, but this is almost November,” said Pastor Phillips representing Common Good.
