1. MISSING PLANE

Time to try it again: The first deployment of an underwater vehicle to hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was aborted early, sending the drone back to the surface 10 hours before expected. Crews will try to send the Bluefin-21 probe back into the Indian Ocean today, weather permitting. So what went awry the first time? Ocean charts didn’t match what the probe was programmed for, so it aborted the mission. It’s a safety mechanism. It could take up to two months to scan the entire search area.

2. EBOLA OUTBREAK

A swift killer: There’s another Ebola outbreak in West Africa, but this one is different. Normally limited to remote jungle villages, the disease has infiltrated Conakry, the capital of Guinea. It’s a bustling city of 2 million people, with lots of potential victims. This is a deadly virus. The mortality rate for Ebola is higher than 50% and in some outbreaks reaches 90%. There is no cure. Over the last three weeks, at least 112 people have died, including 14 health care workers. Officials are focusing on isolating the victims to keep this outbreak from spreading any more, because it can only be spread through direct contact. Only time will tell if they’ve been successful.

3. BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING ANNIVERSARY

One year later: It was an ugly day that started an ugly week. Double bombings near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three people and injured at least 264. Within a couple of days, investigators identified two suspects. We later learned that they were brothers – 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev and 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev – who immigrated to the U.S. from Russia. By Friday that week, there was a carjacking and a shootout with police. The older brother was run over by the younger bother as authorities tried to handcuff him. He later died from his injuries. The city goes on lockdown. A badly wounded and bloodied Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is apprehended in Watertown after a manhunt. He awaits trial in November. Federal prosecutors say they’ll seek the death penalty. This year’s marathon is set for Monday.
