A 30-year-old Cleveland Heights police officer who is the son of State Sen. Thomas Patton died Saturday night while chasing a suspect after an incident at the Marc’s store on Coventry Road.

Dozens of police officers from various departments across the region raced to Huron Hospital in East Cleveland to show support for officer Thomas Patton II, who had been on the force for seven years.

Patton and several other officers were chasing the suspect when Patton “suddenly stopped and doubled over,” said Cleveland Heights Police Chief Martin Lentz. “He started running again and collapsed.”

He was rushed to Huron Hospital after he collapsed, which happened about 8:45 p.m. Lentz said Patton had a pulse, but he soon died at the hospital.

When asked about Patton, Lentz was overcome with emotion and had to stop talking.

Sen. Patton could not be reached for comment Saturday night.
