CHARDON, Ohio — A 51-year-old captain with the Mayfield Heights Fire Department used hidden cameras to spy on boys at a YMCA in Geauga and at his home in Chardon, investigators said.

Daniel Serge was charged with pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor.
A worker at the YMCA in Munson noticed an air freshener in a restroom that was not the brand they used. Sheriff’s deputies found a camera inside the air freshener. Investigators said they identified Serge as a suspect by taking images from the camera.

Investigators from the sheriff’s office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation went to Serge’s home and found several pinhole cameras in walls there, officials said. The cameras fed images to recording equipment in a closet.
Authorities said they found 60 tapes with images of people using the bathroom. Two teenagers, both boys, were identified as victims and investigators believe there are more. The boys may have worked on Serge’s farm, officials said.
Serge lives alone on Claridon-Troy Road in Chardon.
Mayfield Heights Fire Chief Michael Forte said the department was shocked by the allegations leveled against Serge. Fire officials are reviewing Serge’s personnel file, he said. Serge was disciplined last year for a DUI.
