CLEVELAND, Ohio — Less than two weeks before the filing deadline, another nine aspiring Cuyahoga County council members have jumped into the packed pool of candidates.

That makes 50 Democrats, 18 Republicans and on independent competing in September primaries for 11 seats on the inaugural council, which was created by a county charter voters approved last November. About twice that number have pulled petitions, according to a list from the county elections board.

“I think the fact we have this many is great,” said former Parma Heights Mayor Martin Zanotti. “We had hoped with the reform that people would become reconnected to their government and get involved. What’s refreshing about this is you have a real mix of people.”
