he Rev. Earl Chambers walked toward the church with his Bible in his hand and his wife, Shirley, by his side. With each step, other worshippers called out and approached them.
One woman gave Chambers a big hug. “I’ve heard you preach all my life,” said Mary Gaines, 53, of Sacramento. “You knew my parents long before I came along, didn’t you?”
The question brought a smile to Chambers’ face.
“Yes,” he said. “I guess I have.”
There’s a good chance that worshippers who have attended Church of Christ services in Northern California anytime during the last seven decades have heard Earl Chambers deliver a sermon.
