R. Kelly is well known in Tampa Bay as the singer owned property in Davenport and made headlines in 2002 when he was arrested in Florida on charges of child pornography. Kelly was later acquitted on all counts. Now that Kelly’s legal troubles are far behind, he has plenty to look forward to and has just made recent news as being the most nominated performer in the history of the Soul Train Awards. On September 19, 2012, Soul Train announced the 2012 nominees and Kelly has been nominated in two categories, bringing his grand total of nominations to 21. Kelly is nominated for best album of the year for Write Me Back as well as for the Ashford & Simpson songwriter of the year award.

The Soul Train Music Awards began in 1987 when the television series Soul Train created the event to honor the best in R&B, gospel music, hip-hop, and jazz. Soul Train aired on networks from 1971 until 2006. Don Cornelius created the program and was its main host throughout the years. Cornelius was found dead on February 1, 2012 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Soul Train reruns air in Tampa Bay on the Aspire network.
