CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland police gun buyback event is Saturday.
Anyone turning in a working handgun will receive a $100 gift card for gas, food or Target and two tickets to a Cavaliers and Lake Erie Monsters game. They will also be entered into a raffle to win up to $1,000.
Guns will be collected between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Public Safety Center at 2001 Payne Avenue.
“This is a strategy the City of Cleveland and the Division of Police have employed previously,” Chief Michael McGrath said in a news release. “As a result of the gun buyback, someone’s life will be saved.”
The guns will be melted down and recycled by ArcelorMittal Cleveland, the company’s vice president said.
Guns must be unloaded and in a clear plastic bag inside a gym bag, backpack or other container.
They must be driven to the center in the trunk of a vehicle, with ammunition packed separately.
A Cleveland police officer will determine that the gun does function before the incentives are given.
Rifles and shotguns can be turned in, but no incentives will be given for them.
