CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland police gun buyback event this year is set for Saturday.

Anyone turning in a working handgun will receive a $100 gift card for gas, food or Target and two tickets to a Cavaliers and Lake Erie Monsters game. Semi-automatic rifles will be worth $200 in gifts.

Participants will also be entered in a raffle to win up to $1,000.

Guns will be collected between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Public Safety Center, 2001 Payne Ave.

“This will help us to prevent a tragedy in the city of Cleveland,” Police Chief Michael McGrath said in a news release. “As a result of the gun buyback, someone’s life will be saved.”

The guns will be melted down and recycled by ArcelorMittal Cleveland.

•Guns must be unloaded and in a clear plastic bag inside a gym bag, backpack or other container.

•They must be driven to the center in the trunk, with ammunition packed separately.

•A Cleveland police officer will determine that the gun functions before the incentives are given.

•Shotguns and non-semiautomatic rifles can be turned in, but no incentives will be given.

You don’t have to live in Cleveland to participate.
