It’s still not known what led a Connecticut woman to attempt to drive through White House barriers and set off a Capitol Hill police chase that ended with her death Thursday afternoon.

However, law enforcement authorities have confirmed the identity of the woman who shot by police outside the Capitol building. The 34-year-old woman’s name is Miriam Carey of Stamford, CT.

ABC News is reporting that Carey had a history of mental health issues and suffered from post-partum depression. Authorities described Carey has having a “mental illness.”

“She had post-partum depression after having the baby” last August, said the woman’s mother, Idella Carey.

She added, “A few months later, she got sick. She was depressed. … She was hospitalized.”

Dr. Steven Oken, her boss of eight years in New York (the Bronx), described Carey as a “non-political person” who was “always happy.”

“I would never in a million years believe that she would do something like this,” he said. “It’s the furthest thing from anything I would think she would do, especially with her child in the car. I am floored that it would be her.”

Amy Carey, the suspect’s sister, told The Washington Post, “That’s impossible. She works, she holds a job.” Miriam Carey was a dental hygienist in Stamford.

Miriam Carey’s former boss in Connecticut, Dr. Barry J. Weiss, told The New York Times that he and his partner fired Carey last year because of her “temper” but would not go into detail.

Another noteworthy, but sad piece of news about Miraim Carey’s death is that, according to the NY Times: “she managed to get out of her car, and was shot by several officers. And according to a law enforcement official, she was not armed, and it was not known whether she presented an immediate danger.”
