Whether you are a student looking for ways to ensure that homework gets done as quickly and as smoothly as possible, or an adult wanting to encourage your children to complete their homework as accurately as possible, there are a number of ways that you can maintain good homework habits.

Get to it as soon as possible

Unless there is a good reason that you cannot, the best thing to do is to start on your homework as soon as you get home. Have a drink and a snack if necessary, then just sit down and complete your work. You will then have the rest of the evening free to relax and you won’t have the threat of incomplete work hanging over you.

Prioritize

If you have a lot of homework in one go, then you will need to prioritize according to the date it is due in and the difficulty level. If you leave the homework you know is going to be the hardest until last, you will be tired and find it even more difficult. Do it while you are still fresh. If it helps, make a list of your homework tasks and tick them off as you go along.

Ask for help

If you are struggling with the amount of homework that you have, or with a particular subject, then speak to your teachers and/or parents. They should be able to suggest ways of coping and explain particularly difficult concepts to you. There is a lot of information on the Internet, but it often helps to have someone explain something to you in person.

Find a space without distractions

You need somewhere quiet in order to complete your homework. Doing it in front of the television will result in sloppy work, as will constantly being disturbed by siblings. If you share a bedroom, speak to your parents about setting up a desk in a corner of their bedroom for you to use. If there really is no solution, then consider going to the library or a friend’s house.

Have books and stationery conveniently close

Ideally, you need to have everything that you need with you as you are doing your homework – including books and stationery. If you are constantly having to walk around the house looking for things that you need, it will lengthen the amount of time you need to spend on it. If you have to leave the house to find a place to study, then make sure everything is packed into a bag.

Parents should show an interest

You may feel that it is unnecessary for your parents to monitor your homework, particularly once you are at high school, and you certainly don’t want them standing over your shoulder all the time. However, most parents would appreciate an update on what you are doing, so that they can support you where necessary. Don’t forget they are there to help, not hinder.

These habits will set you in good stead, not just for completing your homework, but for the rest of your life.
