Mike Hegan, former Cleveland Indians announcer, died Christmas morning at age 71.

“On this special day of spending time and appreciating our families, the Cleveland Indians organization is deeply saddened to lose a member of our family with the loss of Mike Hegan this morning down in Hilton Head, SC with family by his side,” said Indians Senior Director of Communications Curtis Danburg.

Hegan was the son of former Indians catcher Jim Hegan.

A graduate of Cleveland’s Saint Ignatius High School, Mike Hegan played professional baseball, beginning his major league career with the New York Yankees in 1964.

He was part of an Oakland A’s team that won the 1972 World Series.

Known for his stellar defense, Hegan played first base and outfield.

Hegan spent 23 years broadcasting baseball both on radio and TV in Cleveland after more than a decade of doing Milwaukee Brewer broadcasts.

He retired from the Indians radio booth following the 2011 season.
