It’s been a busy year in the gospel industry, marked by career-defining moments for some artists, reality TV shows for others, and plenty of great new music along the way.

In case you missed out on any of what made this year another great one for gospel music, take a walk with us through some of the artists, songs and moments that stood out most in GospelPundit.com’s 2013 Year In Review!

Tamela Mann

It’s been decades since Tamela Mann first turned heads as a powerhouse soloist in Kirk Franklin’s group, The Family. So it’s almost poetic that he would be the composer of her now career-defining anthem, “Take Me to the King.” The hit single was actually released in 2012– and even garnered her a GRAMMY nod last year– but Tamela and this tune are still unstoppable, making it ripe and relevant this year, too.  She has inspired audiences across the nation with her jaw-dropping live performance of “Take Me to the King” and, as she approaches half a million albums sold, I’ve got a feeling she’s still just getting started.

Tye Tribbett

Buzz was building about this album ever since Tye announced it would be recorded over the course of TWO live recordings on opposite coasts of the nation. He proved that the hype surrounding Greater Than was much more than just great marketing (though, it really was great)– it became a movement. From generating a host of photos of people throwing up the “greater than” sign with their hands, to countless internet memes reading “He Turned It” (in homage to one of the hottest tunes on the album), Tye once again pushed the envelope and broadened our collective musical horizons. He leads the gospel industry in GRAMMY nominations this year, which is a great way to be reminded that everyone– from his peers to the consumers– recognizes the great contribution he has made.

Tasha Cobbs

This worship artist’s cover of Jesus Culture’s “Break Every Chain” made her one to watch this year, most recently yielding two GRAMMY nods and a host of Stellar Award nominations. Her confident and seasoned approach to leading people in worship, matched with crazy vocal agility and a range that won’t quit, has set a new standard in worship artistry. Her debut album, Grace, has left an entire industry waiting (im)patiently for more.

Anthony Brown & Group TherAPy

It’s not easy to step from the background to the foreground in the music business. Aside from the looming question of whether someone “has what it takes,” it’s often hard to carve out a new space when you’ve been so great in the former space. Anthony Brown & Group TherAPy have proven that they can be known for impeccable supporting roles, then step into the spotlight and own every bit of it. Their hit single, “Testimony,” landed them the #1 spot on Billboard’s Year-End list of Gospel Songs this year, and with good reason. Their innovative, masterful approach to music and artistry has immediately set them apart from their contemporaries.
