AKRON, Ohio – Two Akron men have been arrested in the New Year’s Eve triple homicide.
Michael Deon Hendon, 22, and his brother Eric Donta Hendon, 30, were arrested today, Barberton Police said, and each were charged with three counts of aggravated murder.
The two went to a home on 7th Street NE to rob the residents of drugs and money, police allege. Four people were shot, and three have since died.
Ashley Carpenter, 18, and David Carpenter Kohler, 14, were shot dead in John Kohler’s Barberton home.
John Kohler, 42, the stepfather and father, respectively, of Ashley and David, was pronounced dead at around 3:45 p.m. today at Akron City Hospital.
John Kohler’s girlfriend Ronda Blankenship were also shot.
Police said that Eric Hendon was paroled in June 2013 after being convicted of sexual battery and attempted aggravated murder in 2000.
Police are investigating the incident as motivated by robbery, but few details have been released.
“I have to live the rest of my life without them. This bastard needs to be found and I suggest they find him before my family does,” Leiha Carpenter, Ashley and David’s mother, said.
Blankenship also sustained a gunshot wound to the head, but she managed to call for help. On the 911 call, Blankenship can be heard repeatedly gasping for help.
Blankenship’s mother told NewsChannel5 that her daughter is expected to survive, but she may lose an eye. She is being treated at a Cleveland hospital.
Ashley was a senior at Barberton High School. She was in the marching band and planned to get married after graduation.
David was in middle school. He loved to play football with his friends and planned to follow his sister’s footsteps into the marching band next year.
