Mother Nature is turning this winter into one of the snowiest on record for the Greater Cleveland area.

With the start of spring more than three weeks away, Cleveland has already had 68.7 inches of snow through midnight on Wednesday (Feb. 26.) that makes this season the 19th snowiest winter of the past century.

Another major snow storm that is expected to hit northern Ohio this weekend and early next week could dramatically add to that total. Hopkins International Airport, the official recording location for Cleveland, would need to see another 8.3 inches of snow to move us into the top ten, displacing the winter of 2007 and 2008 with 77.2 inches of snow.

Although a very long shot, Cleveland would need to rack up another 49.2 inches of snow before winter turns to spring to break the all time snowiest winter of 2004 and 2005. During that winter, 117.9 inches – or almost 10 feet of snow – buried the area
