Over the next couple weeks, Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Councils will consider transferring all responsibilities of the city jail to the county sheriff.
If both councils approve, the process of booking, processing and the care of suspects arrested by Cleveland police will be taken over by the county sheriff.
The plan states that suspects arrested by Cleveland police will be taken to the county jail the Cleveland Justice Center instead of the police headquarters.
The consolidation will allow for expedited case management, including early plea negotiations and reducing the overall times from an arrest to disposition.
