In an effort to intervene before students are suspended or expelled, the Cleveland school district uses a classroom that calms upset kids.
It’s called a Planning Center, and each school has one. Students are sent to the classroom to cool down, write about their feelings and learn how to self-regulate their anger.
“I am seeing progress. Suspensions in my opinion are still too high, but we are seeing the numbers go down, ” says Michael Jester, the Planning Center director at Patrick Henry School.
This is part of the district’s focus on student mental health after the SuccessTech Academy Shooting in 2007. When you enter the classroom at Patrick Henry, you hear soothing music and see signs on the wall about learning to control your feelings in a positive way.
