1. MISSING PLANE

A new phase: It’s been almost a week since any underwater pulses have been heard, so Australian authorities said today that they will stop listening for pings coming from the floor of the Indian Ocean and will nowdeploy an underwater vehicle. “We haven’t had a single detection in six days,” Australian chief search coordinator Angus Houston said. “It’s time to go underwater.” They’ll use the Bluefin-21, a probe with side-scan sonar technology that creates pictures from the reflections of sound rather than light.

2. UKRAINE CRISIS

Now what? A Ukrainian government deadline for pro-Russian protesters to lay down their arms and leave occupied buildings passed early today with no sign of it being heeded in the eastern cities of Donetsk or Slaviansk. The protesters were given until 2 a.m. ET to disarm or face a “full-scale anti-terrorist operation” by its armed forces. But the deadline passed with no movement at the regional government building in Donetsk, which has been occupied for more than a week. Previous deadlines have passed with no consequence. NATO says Russian armed forces are massing on Ukraine’s eastern border and could invade, while Moscow says they are merely carrying out military exercises.

3. JEWISH CENTER SHOOTINGS

Three dead: A Missouri man with a long history of anti-Semitism is suspected of killing a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather outside a Jewish community center in Kansas City, and a woman at a Jewish assisted living facility nearby. The 73-year-old man, Frazier Glenn Miller, faces charges of premeditated first-degree murder. He is expected to appear in court today. At least two of the three victims were not Jewish.
