It’s that time of the year. A national day of recognition—and while it doesn’t come with a day off of work or school (although maybe it should) there is still plenty to do to celebrate the holiday that falls on the first Friday in June each year: National Donut Day!
National Donut Day actually originated in Chicago as a way to raise money during the Great Depression and while recognizing the work of The Salvation Army’s “donut lassies” during WWI as they served American soldiers on the front line with donuts that were fried in their helmets.
On Friday, the Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland will be out to celebrate National Donut Day in front of the Huntington Bank Building (200 Prospect Avenue in downtown Cleveland) by giving away 142 dozen Entenmann’s donuts between 7-9 a.m.
“Donut day provides us with a fun way to honor the rich history of The Salvation Army along with raising awareness and funds to continue to support those in need. It’s literally one sweet way to give back!” said Major Lurlene-Kay M. Johnson in a news release.
