The Liberian national is in serious condition at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. So far, no one who had contact with Duncan has shown any indication of having contracted Ebola, authorities said. Duncan’s girlfriend, who only wants to be identified as Louise, is quarantined with one of her children who is younger than 13 and two nephews in their 20s. The four of them were in the apartment when Duncan became ill. A Hazmat team has been hired to clean the apartment and dispose of contaminated materials.

2. ISIS

Possible coalition partner: Turkey is the latest nation to join the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Turkish Lawmakers overwhelming voted to authorize military force against ISIS fighters. ISIS is on the nation’s doorstep with tens of thousands of refugees fleeing across its border. For months, ISIS has been advancing, capturing portions of northern and eastern Syria and western and northern Iraq for what it says is its new Islamic state, or caliphate. Turkey’s move opens the door for the NATO nation to cooperate with a U.S.-led coalition of about 40 nations going after ISIS.

3. HONG KONG

Talks to be held: A breakthrough of sorts in Hong Kong where a top government official will meet with pro-democracy demonstrators. Chief Executive C.Y. Leung has designated his second in command, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, to meet with representatives of the Hong Kong Federation of Students to talk “constitutional development matters.” Until now, the two sides have talked past each other in the streets, in public pronouncements and through the media, not directly to one another. No time or date has been announced for the session. Crowds that have clogged downtown Hong Kong were noticeably thinner today.
