There are multiple reports that rapper and A Tribe Called Quest member Phife Dawg has died.

The Telegraph was one of several outlets to report the rapper’s death.

Producer DJ Chuck Chillout broke the news on Twitter early Wednesday morning.Producer Statik Selektah confirmed the news less than two hours later.

According to The Telegraph, the rapper had been struggling with his health for several years. He had diabetes and received a kidney transplant back in 2008.

There was no immediate information about how he died.

Phife, as he was commonly referred to, was also known as the “Five Foot Assassin” and “The Five Footer” because he was just over five feet tall, Wikipedia reported.

He started A Tribe Called Quest with high school classmates Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad back in 1985.

 

Members of the hip-hop community and others paid tribute to Phife Dawg on Twitter early Wednesday after hearing the news.
