WESTERVILLE, Ohio – An Ohio teen has died after she contracted a brain-eating amoeba while swimming on a trip to North Carolina last week.

The 18-year-old girl belonged to Church of the Messiah United Methodist Church in Westerville, and last week she traveled with the church to West Virginia and North Carolina, singing at churches and nursing homes, according to WCMH,

Before they left North Carolina, the group spent a day at the U.S. Whitewater Center in Charlotte.

“They had one day of recreation where they stopped at the U.S. Whitewater Center and went whitewater rafting and they had a grand day,” Senior Pastor Jim Wilson told WCMH.

On Tuesday it was reported that an 18-year-old Ohio woman died after contracting a brain-eating amoeba while swimming out of state. A representative with Westerville City Schools, where the woman attended school, told NBC station WCMH in Columbus that the woman contracted meningoencephalitis. The woman was not identified and the exact location where she went swimming was not specified. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the amoeba involved in the case usually enters the body through the nose, and inhabits freshwater. The CDC added that only 138 cases of this measure have been reported from 1962 to 2015 and only three people have survived.
