Cleveland Indians legend Larry Doby earned many accolades during his extraordinary life and career.

Doby was the first African-American to play in the American League, following shortly behind Jackie Robinson in 1947. He was a 7-time All-Star, led the American League in homers twice and was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1998.

Now the Tribe legend is being honored by the United States Congress.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to give Doby the Congressional Gold Medal. The resolution, co-sponsored by Rep. Jim Renacci of Wadsworth, received 290 votes

The resolution moves over to the U.S. Senate. Renacci’s opponent in the Senate race this fall, Sen. Sherrod Brown, is co-sponsoring a similar measure for Doby.
