North Carolina’s very own just made a huge donation to help those affected by Hurricane Florence’s widespread impact on the Carolina’s coastal regions.

Jordan made two hefty donations of $1 million–one to the American Red Cross and Foundation For The Carolinas’ Hurricane Florence Response Fund.

“It just hits home,” Jordan said in an interview with the Associated Press. “I know all of those places: Wilmington, Fayetteville, Myrtle Beach, New Bern, and Wallace, which is where my father is from. So quite naturally it hits home, and I felt like I had to act in a sense that this is my home.”

Florence has attributed to 37 deaths since its landfall last week, the AP reports. Early estimates conclude the storm has $22 billion in destruction, adding it to the list of the 10 most costly hurricanes in the nation’s history, according to CBS News.

Jordan has become increasingly philanthropic in recent years, pointing to a growing participation of Black athletes giving back to the communities which nourished them. As younger Black athletes become more comfortable in speaking out about the historic inequalities in America, it’s reassuring to see one of basketball’s G.O.A.T’s step up.

Jordan was born in New York City, but was raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, one of the cities hardest hit by Florence’s devastation. He would go on to play collegiate ball for the Tar Heels at University of North Carolina. He was drafted to the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and the rest is NBA history.

Jordan became increasingly business savvy early in his career and lent his name to the most successful athleisure brand in history. Jordan’s net worth is worth an estimated $1.65 billion according to Forbes.

Jordan’s commitment to his home state is solid as he’s has kept his roots and business endeavors close to home. He’s the owner of The Charlotte Hornets, which he acquired in the 2009-2010 NBA season.
