For the second straight season, Ohio State is the Big Ten champion.

And for the second straight year, the Buckeyes are on the outside looking in at the College Football Playoff.

Despite its 12-1 record and 45-24 victory over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night, Ohio State was unable to crack the CFP committee’s final four. This year’s playoff field will be comprised of No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 Oklahoma, marking the second straight year the Big Ten has been absent from the four-team format.

Alabama will face Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, with Clemson facing Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. The winner of the two games will meet in the College Football Playoff championship on Jan. 7.

Ohio State ranked sixth, behind No. 6 Georgia. The biggest blemish on the Buckeyes’ resume was their lone loss on the year — a 49-20 loss to Purdue, who finished the season with a 6-6 record.

As a result, the 12-1 Buckeyes are headed to Pasadena as the Big Ten’s representative in the Rose Bowl. There, they will meet Pac-12 champion Washington in a game scheduled to be played on New Year’s Day.

Ohio State has not played in the Rose Bowl since 2010. A Rose Bowl berth would mark head coach Urban Meyer’s first in the historical game.
