Living in Northeast Ohio, you may think that you are ready for the cold that is headed our way.

It is still possible, however, to make mistakes.

One of the first things to keep in mind is the difference between a “Wind Chill Advisory” and a “Wind Chill Warning.”

With an advisory, wind chills feel colder than 10 below zero and can lead to frostbite in as little as 15 minutes

With a warning, those wind chills drop to colder than 25 below and frostbite can happen in as little as 5 minutes.

In those conditions, there is really no such thing as wearing too many layers.

According to weather.gov there are things that you do not want on though, such as tight-fitting jewelry, rings and watches.

Doctors also advise to avoid rubbing cold body parts when you are outside and wait until you are inside.

“We want to make that sure we’re doing passive warming. So, get those cold clothes off, get those wet clothes off especially and then layer with warm blankets. Don’t jump into a hot shower, that’s really bad for you,” Akron Children’s spokesperson said.

Weather.gov also suggests avoiding caffeine, which can constrict blood vessels that keep you warm.

Alcohol is also a bad idea, since it reduces shivering, which keeps your temperature up.

Still, it is a good idea drink plenty of fluids, since hydration increases blood volume and can help prevent frostbite.
