The 2019 BET Awards packed a lot into a nearly four-hour show. There were Lifetime Achievement Awards, there were tributes galore. There was a moving performance in honor of the late Nipsey Hussle. Regina Hall managed to quickly move herself to the short list of best BET hosts ever, while simultaneously paying homage to a changing Washington, D.C., her hometown. And of course, there was music – Cardi B., LIl Nas X, Mary J. Blige, Migos, H.E.R., Fantasia, DJ Khaled and John Legend represented music and artists both old and new. Even Rihanna showed up as did the Exonerated Five.
John Legend, DJ Khaled, YG and Marsha Ambrosius celebrated Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, with a performance ending in “Higher” the last video he would appear in.
Blige, who earned the Lifetime Achievement Award, ran through her hits during a lengthy performance, which featured Lil Kim and Method Man. The R&B star went from “My Life” to “No More Drama” to “Just Fine,” when audience members turned the aisles into “Soul Train” lines as they showed their best dance moves while the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul sang onstage.
