The Vancouver police department’s old headquarters, the Public Safety Building at 312 Main St., is itself a threat to public safety, according to a report on the condition of the VPD’s facilities to be delivered to city council today.

The report, dated Jan. 10 but not released to the public, is a shopping list of defects and extra costs associated with the adjoining structures at 312 and 324 Main St., including the risk that the buildings may collapse or be unusable after an earthquake, antiquated plumbing that leaches toxic lead into the water, insect and rodent infestations requiring constant fumigation and the presence of potentially carcinogenic asbestos building materials.

Vancouver’s new police headquarters is located at Cambie and Sixth Avenue, but the Main Street complex remains in daily use.
