BROOKLYN, Ohio — The Hugo Boss plant in Brooklyn will remain open past April 27 as contract negotiations continue, the company said.

“The bargaining teams exchanged proposals targeted at restarting the plant,” said a company statement. “Hugo Boss Cleveland earlier had announced the plant would close April 27 but had agreed to continue bargaining with the union representing almost 300 production employees in hopes its competitive position could be improved.”

The company did not say how much longer the facility, which makes high-end men’s suits, would remain open. Hugo Boss and the Workers United union ended a bargaining session Wednesday without an agreement. The two sides are scheduled to resume negotiations Thursday evening with a federal mediator.

The plant’s Germany-based owners have said the money-making plant it is not “globally competitive” and they have excess capacity overseas where they also manufacturer clothes.

Joe Costigan, treasurer of the union’s Midwest region based in Chicago, said the union is unwavering in its support of its members.
