Former MetroHealth Medical Center system manager Thomas J. Greco was charged with bribery Tuesday in a scheme involving previously charged MetroHealth vice president John J. Carroll and businessman Nilesh R. Patel.

Greco took bribes from Patel, vice president of East West Construction Co., in exchange for business with the hospital, according to charges filed in U.S. District Court. The charges were filed in an information rather than an indictment, which usually means a defendant is working with the government on a plea agreement.

Patel gave Greco a variety of gifts between 2000 and 2008, including gift cards to such places as Sam’s Club, Tops Markets, Giant Eagle, Dillards, Home Depot and Applebee’s, prosecutors said.

Patel also provided Greco with landscaping, jewelry and other goods an services, according to the information. The two men then conspired to make sure Patel recovered the cost of the gifts through inflated payments to East West.
