You are what you eat. So this could mean that eating satisfying-but-equally-bad-for-you foods may stand in the way of your beauty. Of course, beauty is supposedly skin deep, but if you’re still concerned about the skin that people actually see, you may want to watch the foods you put into your body.

There are plenty of foods that have negative effects on our hair, skin, and nails but there are also other foods that allow these things to flourish.  Some of us subtly become product junkies as we try multiple skin creams, hair vitamins and other beauty products in an effort to get or maintain glowing skin and healthy hair. However, we forget that no amount of expensive lotion or vitamins can replace the lasting effects of eating the right foods.

So before trying an over-the-counter quick fix to combat subpar skin or dull and brittle hair, up your dose of  these ‘beauty foods.’

Blueberries

Blueberries are loaded with vitamin C and immune-boosting antioxidants. They combat toxins in the body and produce smoother and suppler skin. Although the teenage acne days may be over for many of you, there are other skin issues that often creep up in our adult years. Strawberries, blackberries, and pomegranate are also other berry options that aid in smooth, lithe skin.

Oysters

Although definitely an acquired taste, oysters are a low-fat source of protein, which is good for healthy hair. There is also lots of vitamin B in oysters, which can make hair look healthier and shinier if you’re feeling that your hair is giving off the dry, dull look. In addition, they contain high amounts of zinc, a mineral that can prevent acne and boost your immune system. If oysters aren’t your thing, try lobster, clams or mussels.

Tomatoes

Without enough vitamin A skin can appear dull and dry. Tomatoes are full of fiber and vitamin A, so eating a few tomatoes can assist in the development of skin cells and the maintenance of skin cell health–aka, your skin won’t resemble that of a crocodile. Not to mention that tomatoes are deemed probably the most healthy fruit/vegetable for abilities to help prevent diseases.

Oranges

It’s no secret that oranges are loaded with vitamin C. So if you’re looking for plumper, younger skin, eat more oranges. Although we would like to think that ‘black don’t crack,’ sun damage can affect skin of all races causing it to age faster. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that combats those free radicals that lead to premature aging of the skin. It is also recommended that you grind up the skin from oranges and make yourself a scrub. Not only do the inner contents of oranges do great things, but the skin of one can help provide a glow to your own.
