CONNEAUT, OH (WOIO) – –

A recent Conneaut High School graduate is going on to serve his country in the United States Air Force.

18-year-old Tyler Webster is hoping to take his girlfriend, Hannah Lower, to the prom before leaving for a three-year tour. The school district, however, is standing in their way.

The problem is that Hannah missed the April 27 guest notification deadline, and Principal Dawn Zappitelli doesn’t seem willing to make an exception so the teens can attend the Saturday night dance.

“They make exceptions all the time and break the rules all the time,” Tyler said. “So I don’t understand.”

Tyler ships out to Alaska on Monday for a three-year tour with the Air Force.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” Tyler’s mom, Marjo said. “Especially when there are different circumstances for every person.”

Principal Zappitelli refused to talk to 19 Action News on camera, but sent an email saying that part of the denial is because it takes two weeks to do a background check on guests. Tyler is a 2011 graduate of the school.
