BEDFORD, OH (WOIO) –

Around 2:30 p.m., the bear came down from his original tree, switched trees several times and then took off running in the parking lot and into a nearby wooded area. Officials hope the animal is heading south towards Tinkers Creek State Park.

Officials in Bedford used a fire hose to try and spray a black bear down from a tree on Rockside Road. The plan backfired, and caused the bear to climb higher up the tree.

Around 12:30 p.m., officials brought in a big bear cage, and built a fence around the trunk of the tree. They hope the bear will come down willingly in the fenced-in area, and that they can then coax him into the cage.

This, after officials were called to the Rockside Park Towers after residents spotted the bear around 7:30 a.m.

Wildlife experts from Ohio Department of Natural Resources say they don’t plan to tranquilize the bear at this time. They don’t want to tranquilize the bear because it takes ten minutes for a bear to drop, and they are afraid of what a drugged bear would do. They claim it’s safer to wait the bear out. [Check out Black Bear Safety tips from ODNR]

The bear is estimated to be around 400 pounds and stand more than 6-feet tall.

A bear was first spotted in the Bedford and Bedford Heights area on Monday evening. It is unknown if this is the same bear.

A bear was also spotted in Streetsboro this past weekend.
