CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

A jury has convicted a rogue Amish group in a series of violent hair-cutting attacks on other members of the Amish community.

Nearly 20 men, including Bishop Sam Mullet, were convicted of committing a hate crime and conspiracy. The hate crime conviction carries a minimum prison sentence of 20 years in jail.

After a week of deliberating, the jury reached a verdict shortly before 2 p.m. in Cleveland Federal Court.

The vicious attacks happened in Jefferson, Trumbull, Holmes and Carroll Counties. Prosecutors say Sam Mullet ordered the violent hair cuts. The attacks were meant to humiliate and punish the people Mullet did not believe are faithful enough.

The defendants forcibly restrained multiple Amish men and cut off their beards and head hair with scissors and battery-powered clippers, causing bodily injury to these men while also injuring others who attempted to stop the attacks.  In the Amish religion, a man’s beard is considered sacred.

The men will be sentenced on January 24 at 9 a.m. They will remain jailed until they are sentenced.
