SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Rapid Transit Authority of Greater Cleveland (RTA) has filed a disorderly conduct charge against Shidea Lane of Shaker Heights, and an assault charge has been slapped against the bus driver.

This, after the RTA rider approached the bus driver and an argument ensued. Lane is seen on cellphone video shoving RTA driver Artis Hughes. The next thing that happens is an exchange of words before you can see Hughes uppercutting Lane.

The video went viral throughout the U.S.

RTA has placed Hughes on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

RTA’s media representative said RTA as an entity can not file assault charges. It will be up to Hughes if he wants to file such a complaint.

In part, officials with RTA said in a statement that misconduct on public transportation is a crime. “We are working with our unions to strengthen rules to protect employees and our customers against misconduct, as well as to increase penalties.”

Hughes’s charge is a misdemeanor, punishable with up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted.

Both Hughes and Lane are due in court in November.

The video has been posted to YouTube. It is age restricted. You can watch it here: http://youtu.be/tiwMvqrBgws
