CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

19 Action News has learned RTA is testing shields or enclosures that surround drivers.

This comes after an attack on an RTA driver as he was in his seat Thursday afternoon, and the viral video where an RTA driver punched a female passenger after she spit on him and assaulted him.

RTA spokesperson Mary Shaffer said in an e-mail, “We are doing testing of plexiglass-type enclosures at the request of operators.  It is important to explore their safety possibilities.”

Cleveland Councilman Kevin Conwell wants action.  He says if RTA doesn’t put up the shields, Council could pass a law requiring that to happen.

“We have to stop this foolishness and this madness, and if the administration is not willing to work with us, then we will do whatever it takes to make sure shields are put on the bus,” Conwell said.

The bus driver’s union has also called for tougher penalties for anyone assaulting a bus or train driver.

No timetable was given for how long the testing of the shields might take.
