STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – Strongsville Mayor Tom Perciak said the ongoing teachers strike has him concerned about safety, first and foremost.
Perciak told NewsChannel5 he is ready to help resolve the strike in any way he can, and doesn’t agree with the teachers’ decision to leave the bargaining table and walk onto the picket line.
“I’ve asked repeatedly, please allow me to get involved,” said Perciak. “The only way we’re going to get this done is by sitting down, continuing the dialog, and hammering out an agreement.”
“I believe in the collective bargaining process. I believe there are two sides to every story and I have asked over and over if I can help.”
Mayor Perciak believes his experience in leading companies in the private sector could be of some help in getting both sides talking once again. He’s reached out to the Strongsville superintendent and leaders with the teachers union.
Perciak believes the teachers strike will hurt more than just the education process.
“Our sports programs, our extra circular activities, and numerous community events held in our school buildings are also being interrupted,” explained Perciak. “This strike must be settled as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, the Strongsville Police Department is on high alert at all school buildings and entrances, so far keeping the peace as teachers show their presence on the picket line.
“We have to ensure the safety of our students and the striking teachers,” said Perciak. “We also have to take into consideration the safety of substitute teachers, our bus drivers, and all of our workers at our schools that are covered under another contract.”
