CLEVELAND – Marathon runners from northeast Ohio continued to return home from Boston Tuesday.

NewsChannel5 spoke with Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty moments after his flight from Boston returned from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. When the first blast went off, McGinty was mere minutes away from wrapping up his 14th Boston Marathon.

McGinty said the chaos turned cheers into cries for help. Emergency crews responded quickly.

“They sprinted to the scene…the city has a lot to be proud of with their police and fire departments. It was very heroic,” McGinty explained.

As investigators still try to figure out who was behind the bombings, McGinty hopes authorities nab those responsible quickly “and puts them where they belong…for such a cheap, low life attack.”

Stark County residents Jerry and Deana Fresenko had crossed the finish line at least 10 minutes before the explosions. It was their first time taking part in the Boston Marathon.

Deana remembers sitting in their hotel room when they felt the ground shake.

“It kind of didn’t sink in at first because we’ve run in a couple of other marathons and it’s ‘ooow, ahhh, we finished, it’s great.’ It was when I called my daughter that reality hit and I kind of broke down a little bit because I was like I was so close.”

Her husband, Jerry, a track coach at Louisville High School, said the incident was scary but it won’t scare him away from any future races.

“I would definitely consider doing it again.”
