CLEVELAND – A family member and witness to an east side Cleveland park shootout over the holiday weekend is “shocked” by the incident but said her 12-year-old cousin is in stable condition at a local hospital.

The girl suffered a minor wound after being hit by a bullet during crossfire at Walter A. Burks Park early Sunday evening.

“There was little blood loss and she never lost consciousness,” said cousin Jade Davis. “She is recovering.”

In all, five family members went to the park before 7:30 p.m. Sunday: Davis, her 2-year-old daughter, a 14-year-old sister and their aunt, plus the 12-year-old victim. Two older men were also sitting in the park at the time, Davis recalled.

When gunfire rang out, they all dropped to the ground.

After realizing the 12-year-old had been shot, the family called 911 while simultaneously loading the girl into their car and driving her to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Police did take statements from the family at the hospital. The girl is said to be in stable condition.

“I think it’s ridiculous. It’s horrible. It’s frightening, scary and unacceptable,” said Davis. “I know people out there saw something and hopefully they’ll come forward.”
