CLEVELAND – A Good Samaritan was struck and killed on Interstate 90 eastbound Thursday morning while trying to help a woman and a 4-year-old girl move the stalled vehicle off the highway and onto the berm.

The fatal crash happened around 10:45 a.m. at the East 55th Street exit and shutdown the highway for several hours.

Cleveland police said a Chevy Malibu driven by the woman stalled in the third lane of I-90 east near East 55th Street. A man and his friend stopped to help, telling both to stand off to the side of the road.

Both Good Samaritans began pushing the vehicle, one using the driver’s side door, off the road. That’s when police said a Ford Excursion crashed into the Saturn which hit the man pushing the Malibu from the driver’s side door.

The Excursion hit the concrete wall and knocked a large portion of it into the westbound lanes. The Saturn collided with the Malibu pushing it further down the highway, police said.

Authorities believe the man was struck by both vehicles.

The 50-year-old Good Samaritan was taken to the Cleveland Clinic where he later died from his injuries. Five other people were taken to area hospitals for treatment and were released.

According to authorities, the crash remains under investigation and no arrests or citations have been made at this time.

The name of the man who died won’t be released until his family has been notified.

The highway was closed for hours as crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes reopened around 4:45 p.m.
