An escaped inmate from the Mansfield Correctional Institution has been captured in Ashland.

Pete Elliott with the U.S. Marshall’s Office confirmed to NewsChannel 5 that 49-year-old James David Myers  walked into Olivesburg General Store at 4778 State Route 545 in Ashland around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Store surveillance video shows a citizen in an American flag shirt recognized Myers and tackled him to the ground. The citizen’s name is unknown at this time.

Afterwards Myers reportedly told clerk the clerk he gave up and wanted to go back to jail.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and took Myers back into custody.

Myers has been returned to the Mansfield Correctional Institution and criminal and administrative investigations are ongoing.

Myers escaped from the Mansfield Correctional Institution Wednesday night. Inmate Myers was last identified prior to the 9 p.m. head count.
