MANSFIELD, Ohio – An escaped inmate from the Mansfield Correctional Institution has been captured in Ashland.
Pete Elliott with the U.S. Marshals Office confirmed to NewsChannel5 that James David Myers, 47, walked into Olivesburg General Store at 4778 State Route 545 in Ashland around 7 p.m. Thursday.
Store surveillance video shows a citizen in an American flag shirt recognized Myers and tackled him to the ground. The citizen’s name is unknown at this time.
Later, Myers reportedly told the clerk he gave up and wanted to go back to jail.
Some of the people who work in the store where Myers was captured are speaking out.
“We had the wanted picture right there by the register,” said one cashier.
“I just wanted to stay calm and try not to show that I know this is guy they’re looking for,” said another employee.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and took Myers back into custody.
Myers has been returned to the Mansfield Correctional Institution and criminal and administrative investigations are ongoing.
Myers escaped from the Mansfield Correctional Institution Wednesday night. Inmate Myers was last identified prior to the Wednesday 9 p.m. head count.
According to records with the Department of Rehabilitation and Records, the 47 year-old-man is designated as a sexually violent offender. Myers is 5 feet 11 inches tall and 172 pounds.
In July 2010, Myers followed a woman home from a bar, entered her home and repeatedly raped her throughout the night, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office. They said he left the next morning but was spotted outside her home several times over the course of several days after the rape.
A jury convicted him of numerous charges including rape with a firearm specification, kidnapping with a firearm specification, aggravated burglary, OUI and menacing by stalking. A judge sentenced Myers to life in prison with parole eligibility after 40 years.
The crimes were reported to have been committed in Summit County.
At a news conference Thursday afternoon, troopers said they were providing protection for Myers’ victim. Troopers and the prison warden were unable to release details about how the inmate escaped.
