Folks in the music biz wear lots of fake things: hair, lashes, even body parts, and according to comeback gospel artist Michelle Williams, smiles. “Sometimes in the industry we have to smile when we’re really hurting inside,” the 33-year-old Grammy winner told NBC’s “The Grio,” while discussing friend and peer Kelly Rowland’s honesty in her R&B single, “Dirty Laundry.”

The high-pressure music business demands sales and makes them through keeping up appearances for the public. But the third member of Destiny’s Child, who recently released a new inspirational single, “If We Had Your Eyes,” believes transparency is helpful. “Our testimony can really help somebody that’s struggling with what we struggled with.”

For years, Williams has struggled with redefining long-held views of what it means to be “saved,” which does not, for the most traditional, include singing secular music in the club on Saturday, and praise and worship songs in the church house on Sunday.
