The defense rested in the DUI case of Cleveland Councilman Zack Reed without Reed taking the stand.

The jury deliberated for a short while Monday before breaking for the day. They will resume deliberations Tuesday morning.

Reed was arrested in March after officers said he was pulled over by Cleveland police, who said he failed to stop at a light before turning. Officers said he failed a field sobriety test and smelled of alcohol.

The arrest was Reed’s third for DUI. If found guilty he could face a maximum of six months in prison, a sentence that could put his council seat in jeopardy.

In Reed’s Second Ward, where he has served as councilman since 2000, residents were waiting for word from the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. Ice cream shop owner Bill Vince worries the arrests serve as a distraction.
