The people who set fire to a church van over the weekend have only encouraged the pastor of the South Side congregation to continue his efforts to help youths in the neighborhood, he said yesterday.

The Rev. Frederick LaMarr suspects that the early Sunday fire outside Family Missionary Baptist Church might be retaliation for his work with young people, including his role last month in helping a teen murder suspect turn himself in to Columbus police.

“I’m out here on a daily basis,” LaMarr said as he stood along Oakwood Avenue beside the burned-out, 18-passenger Dodge van. “This is what Christianity is about. It’s about putting yourself in harm’s way for somebody else.”

LaMarr said the van was set on fire about 2 a.m. Sunday. Surveillance video shows what appear to be at least eight teens or young men walking around the church before at least two of them enter the van, then exit as fire engulfs the dashboard.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Ferguson said church officials indicated there were no recent threats or angry members. An investigation continues.
